When decay or infection reaches the nerve, the choice is usually root canal treatment or extraction. Keeping your own tooth is almost always the better outcome.
What it involves
Why a root canal instead of pulling it
Inside every tooth is a soft core containing the nerve and blood supply. When bacteria reach it, the tissue becomes infected and it hurts — often badly, often at night. A root canal removes that infected tissue, cleans the space, and seals it.
The alternative is extraction. That solves the pain, but it leaves a gap that then needs a bridge or an implant, both of which cost more than the root canal would have. Keeping the natural tooth is usually the cheaper and better answer.
A treated tooth is more brittle than a healthy one, so it is normally protected with a crown afterwards. That is part of the plan, not an upsell added later.

How the treatment runs
01 — Examination and x-ray
We confirm the nerve is involved and check how far the infection has spread before deciding anything.
02 — Anaesthetic
Given properly and allowed time to take effect. The tooth is numb before work begins.
03 — Cleaning the canals
The infected tissue is removed and the canals cleaned and shaped. Depending on the tooth this may be done across more than one appointment.
04 — Sealing
The cleaned canals are filled and sealed so bacteria cannot re-enter.
05 — Crown
The tooth is usually crowned to protect it, since a treated tooth is more prone to fracture.

Common questions
Does a root canal hurt?
The procedure is done under anaesthetic. Most of the pain people associate with root canals is the infection beforehand — the treatment is what relieves it.
How many visits does it take?
Often one or two, sometimes more depending on the tooth and how much infection is present. We will tell you the expected number at the start.
Can I just have it pulled instead?
You can, and sometimes extraction genuinely is the right call. But replacing the tooth afterwards usually costs more than saving it would have. We will explain both options honestly.
Do I really need the crown?
In most cases yes. A treated tooth loses some strength, and a fracture later can mean losing the tooth entirely after paying to save it.
What if the pain stops before my appointment?
Pain stopping does not mean the infection has gone — sometimes it means the nerve has died. Keep the appointment.
